Surface Science Western has a new Director, congratulating Dr. Mark Biesinger on his new role!

Congratulations to Dr. Mark Biesinger! As of July 1, 2019 Dr. Biesinger took on the Director position at Surface Science Western.

Dr. Biesinger is an internationally recognized expert in X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) with extensive experience in surface analysis and materials characterization techniques including 25+ years of experience operating and maintaining various XPS, SEM/EDX, optical microscopes, and ToF-SIMS instruments. Additionally, Mark has several highly-cited publications in the field, he authors and maintains the X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS) Reference Pages, author/co-author over 60 peer-reviewed publications, and has issued over 3000 proprietary technical reports. Dr. Biesinger also serves as Secretary-Treasurer for the Division of Surface Science of the Chemical Institute of Canada.

Mark joined Surface Science Western in 1992 as a Chemistry graduate student examining reactions of toxic gases on military grade charcoal filters, and then became a full-time Research Scientist in 1995. Dr. Biesinger has worked with local, national, and international partners in a wide-range of industrial sectors including automotive, aerospace, mining, energy, medical, environmental, and electronics.

Not only did Mark lead SSW’s business development, marketing, academic interaction, and larger collaborative and commercial research project portfolios starting in 2010; Mark also completed his Doctoral degree in Applied Science (Minerals & Materials) in 2012 while maintaining full-time employment at SSW.
